Speedos and trunks

While I was getting changed for a swim yesterday, three guys came into the locker room after their swim. They each had pretty fit bodies and from their ages I assumed they were university students. They were all wearing square cut swimming trunks. But when they took these off they each had a pair of speedos on underneath. I can't recall seeing this before - could it be a new trend?
